With over 20 years experience in the industry, Morrison’s is the siding contractor of choice. At Morrison’s we know the siding material you choose defines the look and style of your home and serves the important purpose of shielding it from Mother Nature. Thanks to technological advances in siding materials, longevity and durability have become key elements in their design and can vary over a wide range of budgets. They can also boost the value of your home.

In choosing siding, remember you will live with your choice for a long time, and different siding choices can make big aesthetic changes to one’s house.

When selecting siding, here are five basic aspects to consider:

  1. Water Resistance: Water-resistant types of siding will have longer life spans.
  2. Energy Efficiency: Check the R-value rating for energy savings and understand what will be needed as far as insulation beneath the cladding.
  3. Durability: Does it have the strength to resist temperature shifts present in your climate? How does it stand up to everyday wear and tear?
  4. Aesthetics: Siding will be in full view as you come and go, so make sure it is beautiful to you.
  5. Versatility: Make sure the siding has the versatility to meet the varied needs of your specific project. If there are aspects of your home’s exterior that will make using a particular type of siding more challenging than others, make sure you understand what the added costs or necessary adjustments will be.

Our Expert’s Help Determine Which Siding Is Right For You

Vinyl Siding

Cost effective and easy to maintain, vinyl siding is one of the most popular choices for the home’s exterior. It is rot proof, termite proof and much less expensive than the product it masterfully imitates– wood siding. Today’s vinyl siding is in a greater range of colors and textures and resists heat and damage better than earlier versions.

Wood Siding

The traditional favorite, wood has declined in popularity as cost has increased and homeowners look for lower maintenance materials. Wood simply doesn’t perform well in harsh weather conditions and is also at the mercy of outdoor critters, including insects and other animals attracted to it. Types include clapboard, plywood, hardboard/composition, rectangular plank, cedar and wood plank.

  • Available as clapboard or lap siding, shakes, and shingles
  • Cedar and redwood are naturally decay-resistant
  • Flammable; look for factory-treated with flame retardant
  • Needs to be stained or painted every few years
  • Damaged boards are easy to replace

Masonry and Masonry Facades:

Higher budgets can allow for more permanent materials, such as brick and stone. By implementing masonry into your siding project, it gives the home’s exterior a solid appearance and high durability. The most common materials are brick and stone veneers, traditional cement-based stucco and newer polymer finishes that mimic the look of stucco. Masonry is durable, requires little maintenance and gives your home a distinct appearance, adding value and curb appeal.Brick is a traditional option made from fired clay. It needs to be supported by the home’s foundation.

  • Available in many sizes, colors, and textures
  • Won’t rot, burn, or fade, should last a century
  • Provides excellent sound and thermal insulation
  • May result in lower insurance rates
  • No maintenance the first 25 years; then inspect mortar joints

Cementitous Siding:

Fiber cement siding, a mixture of sand, cement and cellulose, is tougher and stronger than vinyl siding and imitates wood-grain remarkably well. It can be imprinted with designs and painted in a variety of colors and comes in various sized shingles, allowing you to create a unique look for your home. This siding choice is more expensive then vinyl siding, but can be cost effective when compared to a full-scale refurbishment of wood clapboard.Fiber-cement siding (made of cement, sand, and cellulose fiber) looks like wood, but it’s more durable and less expensive.

  • Available in planks from 5 1/4 inches to 12 inches wide
  • Smooth or wood textures available
  • Fire-resistant and termite-proof; won’t rot or crack
  • Holds paint up to 15 years
  • Limited, transferable warranties up to 50 years

Interlocking joints keep moisture out and almost completely eliminate seams, which means it not only looks authentic, but also, it’ll never warp, buckle or shift like wood. Morrison’s did a great job covering our house with new vinyl siding. While the job took a bit longer than projected to complete, the crew took a lot of care fitting the siding around our old New England house.

I wrote to you back in January to describe how pleased I was with the Kensington Quantum 2 Windows that were installed in our house last summer. We have noticed more even heating throughout the two levels and there are no longer “cold” areas.

Our recently completed project was large and complex impacting several areas of our home over a two-month span. Despite the size, complexity, and duration of this project- this was without a doubt the BEST home improvement experience.
