An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms at the edge of a roof and prevents melting snow from draining off the roof. The water that backs up behind the dam can leak into a home and cause damage to walls, ceilings, insulation and other parts of the house.
1. Indoor heating rises through the ceiling into the attic and warms the roof surface.
2. Snow on the heated part of the roof melts and flows down until it reaches that part of roof that is below 32 degrees. Water freezes into an ice dam.
3. The dam grows as it is fed by melting snow above, but water held by the dam backs up and stays liquid.
4. Eventually, the water finds cracks in the roof covering and flows into the attic. From there it could seep through the ceiling and interior walls.
Morrison's also provides services to prevent future snow and ice dams
Provide adequate attic insulation to reduce the transmission of heat into the attic from living spaces below.
To prevent warm, moist air in living spaces from infiltrating into the attic, Morrison’s properly insulates the space, creating a good air barrier. We assure good attic ventilation to replace warm air in the attic with cold outside air. Consult a professional for the best way to avoid ice dams and water damage in your home.
Morrisons can install your choice of deicing cables from the most energy efficient to the most advanced cables.
Deicing cables prevent the build-up of ice and ice dams by melting the snow that falls or melts to the edge of the roof.
